Prayer And Spiritual Warfare By Pastor Sam Adeyemi
We have emphasized that we are involved in a huge spiritual conflict. Jesus came to establish victory over Satan, sin and its consequences (1 John 3: 8b; Acts 10:38). After defeating Satan, He delegated His authority to us, His representatives, who are to declare the fact that Jesus conquered Satan and the power of death (Luke 10:18-19; Mark 16:17; Acts 1:8)
We are to establish God’s kingdom, His principles and values which are built on love because that is what our world needs. Prayer plays a very strategic role since it encompasses all aspects of spiritual warfare. Prayer is communication with the spirit world; it is in prayer that we relate with God and it is also in prayer that we confront principalities and powers. Jesus taught us to pray by giving His disciples a model prayer which we call the Lord’s Prayer.
What does prayer do in spiritual warfare? Jesus taught us to pray “forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us”. Through prayer we receive forgiveness of sins and become righteous before God. Righteousness, which means being in right standing with God, plays a very important role in our effectiveness in spiritual warfare (James 5:16). There is no point asking God for any blessing until you have asked for His forgiveness (Proverbs 15:8). If you are walking in disobedience, the demons will not obey you (2 Corinthians 10:6).
We also worship God through prayer. This is very critical because it is in the place of worship that we submit absolutely to God and His will. We recognize He is the ultimate; His wisdom is the best we can get so Jesus taught us to pray “Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name”. Next, Jesus taught us to pray “give us this day, our daily bread”. Therefore, it is in prayer that we ask God for the necessary resources to fight in this warfare we are engaged in (2 Corinthians 10:3; Matthew 7:7-8).
Our God is a God of strategy and we receive direction through prayer. Jesus prayed “let your kingdom come, let your will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven”. Jesus taught us that there is a need for strategising and consulting on all issues of life (Luke 14: 28-32; John 5:19). David, in the Bible, never lost a single battle because he always received specific strategies from God. He never took anything for granted; neither did he put his trust in human wisdom (1 Samuel 23).
When we pray, we ask God for help because there is none wiser or more powerful than God (1 Chronicles 5: 20). Do not be discouraged and run away from God when afflictions and troubles rise from different sources (2 Samuel 15). Learn to call on God for help. In prayer, we should intercede, that is, to secure help from God on behalf of other people (1 Timothy 2:1-2). When we pray, we declare our authority in Christ and enforce our victory over our circumstances (Matthew 16:18-19; Revelation 12:11). Finally, corporate prayer is powerful and it generates tremendous power (Matthew 18: 18-20; Acts 16: 25-26; 4: 29-31; 12:1-19). Miracles happen when we pray!
