What God Desires of Every Follower of Christ

Following the Lord Jesus Christ is a sacred choice and such choice could only be made by true Christians. Professing Christians who could not follow the Lord willingly and joyfully are revealing their questionable love and faith in Him.

Christ is why we are Christians. The principal reason why a Christian walks with God is due to his/her faith in Jesus Christ . Faith goes forward, doubt looks around and unbelief turns back. He who has faith in the Lord Jesus Christ walks with Him consistently and uncompromisingly; he who doubts the Lord walks inconsistently while he looks around for other way; and he who lives in unbelief, avoids walking with the Lord.

In Luke 9:57-58, it is written, And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air havenests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

These passages remind us of the importance of counting the cost before following the Lord. Evidently, the man desired to follow Jesus; but he overlooked the cost of following Him and the kind of life he may have in the Christian course of life. Certainly, the Lord never promised “bed of roses” for those who would follow Him in truth; but He promised His abiding presence.

Following Christ in truth has uncompromising costs. In Luke 9:23, it is written, And he said to them all, If any manwill come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. (KJV)

This passage from the Bible should be considered seriously by all believers so they may be aware of their God-given responsibility. How sad, but true that, many professing Christians today seek things for their own interest, and not much for the advancement of the Gospel of Christ.

Self-denial

Luke 9:23   9:57-62     18:18-30

-Self-denial is an excellent door to Christ-likeness

Denying ourselves for the sake of Christ is a wise way of letting the Lord control our lives for His honor and glory. It will surely lead us to spiritual maturity and Christ-likeness. Without self-denial, a believer could never follow the Lord with all his mind, heart and strength.

A lot of professing Christians today deny the Lord in many ways in exchange for their own preference and interest. As a consequence, worldliness easily creeps into their lives because they overlooked the deceitfulness of sin.

We must learn to deny ourselves, and by faith, keep on loving, serving and following the Lord. Remember how Jesus emptied Himself, visited this sinful world and died a shameful death at Calvary. He did it all so we may have hope of eternal life through faith in Him.

 Blessed Responsibility

-Great responsibility offers great reward

Christians have a vital role in this sin-darkened world. They are the privileged people assigned to carry out the “Great Commission”, a great task that must not be neglected.

In Luke 9:23, it is written, And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. (KJV) Serving the Living God should be counted as an honor and never as a heavy burden. Christians must be aware of their responsibility and must do it joyfully and faithfully.

A Christ-centered Life

Luke 9:23-26

-A well-lived life is a Christ-centered life

-A Christ-centered life is a rewarding life

A self-centered man will end up a loser, but a Christ-centered believer will be blessed.

In Luke 9:24, it is written, For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. (KJV). The world has many enticing offers to its inhabitants and they that are being deceived will suffer the consequences of their earthly choice.

The surest guide for any Christian is the word of God. It gives us direction and  helps us to make wise choices so we don’t fall in the pit of destruction.

In Luke 9:25-26, it is written, For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in hisFather’s, and of the holy angels. (KJV)

These verses denote the danger of neglecting God’s great salvation while desiring and gaining the world’s deceitful riches.

In Hebrews 2:1-3, it is written,Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;(KJV)

We really need to pray earnestly for the lost so they may find their way to the Living Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. It would be a tragic life if they gained the whole world, but lost their own souls.

It may seem a “crazy act” before the sight of the world for a person to seek first the kingdom and righteousness of God; but in the sight of God, it is a God-glorifying act.

Trust the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and follow Him at all cost and God will truly use and bless your life in a marvelous way.
